Comments:

The book So-Called Dollars was first published in 1963. It was than, and still is today, the only book to deal comprehensively with the subject of these popularly collected mementos.

So-Called Dollars are near-dollar size coins and medals that were primarily issued as commemoratives for national, local, or regional events, and also commemorated famous personalities.

Some of the popular subjects featured were World’s Fairs and Expositions such as the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, and the 1933 – 34 Century of Progress Exposition. Other notable So-Called Dollars include the famous Lesher Referendum Dollars.

So-Called Dollars are quite possibly among most widely collected of all U.S. medals.

The book starts with the legendary Erie Canal Completion issues of 1826 and covers 135 years of the golden age of American history which are reflected in the array of issues catalogued in the book ending in 1961.

This 2nd edition has many more illustrations and historical information and covers more listings including previously unknown metal varieties and totally new items.

All sizes for the items featured are in mm rather than in 16ths of an inch as in the 1963 edition which simplifies measuring.

All photographs are in clear and legible black and white and there are several full color plates at the back of the book.

Each issue listed in the book has been assigned a rarity rating of from R-1, indicating more than 5,000 known, to R-10, meaning "unique." In addition, a loose-leaf price guide is included in each book. The index has been expanded to include references to more subjects and places.

The Hibler & Kappen book remains the standard reference work on the subject with its "HK" numbers an instantly recognizable means of cataloging and identification.

This book is a great addition to any numismatic library.
