Comments:
Weimar W. White is a chemist with 19 patents relating to diverse chemical systems and has published in technical journals, with over a dozen scientific articles in the field of chemistry. Being a coin collector himself he has a keen awareness of the chemical process that causes coins to tarnish.
This book is a compilation of articles on coin chemistry the author has written over the 20+ years. Some deal with the cleaning of coins to remove oxidation products and/or foreign matter and some deal with good coin care in terms of preventing chemical wear from oxygen and sulfur. Other articles deal with experimental conditions which show that chemical wear or toning can occur while coins are in diverse holders or cases (such as the encapsulated certified coin holders PCGS, NGC, ANACS etc.) if oxygen and sulfur find their way to the coin's surfaces.
Coin chemistry does not have to be a mystery, and hopefully this book will help collectors understand how coins oxidize and produce surface coloration. The book is useful in learning how to prevent toning and how to keep one's coins attractive for the next generation of collectors. Various coin cleaning techniques are discussed to remove oxidation products from the surface of coins. He also mentions the merits of the Intercept Shield line of protective coin holders, albums and storage boxes.
